Explaining a Migraine Headache

A migraine headache is one of the most painful types of headaches you can get and they are usually the result of some sort of condition that results in their appearance. In all honesty the exact causes and origins of the migraine headache are not known and medical researchers can only guess as to what causes a migraine headache.

However at the same time there have been very successful treatments developed for migraine headaches that have been able to help patients live their lives as normally as possible. Some treatments for the migraine headache are only done on a per headache basis while others are continual treatments for what could normally be a crippling condition.

As mentioned earlier no one really knows what causes a migraine headache but what we do know is where the pain comes from and some of the potential triggers that can set off a migraine headache. A migraine headache is thought to occur when there is a chemical imbalance in the blood stream and the blood vessels around the skull begin to expand or contract causing severe discomfort. The brain itself is not affected by pain or the sensation of pain so this condition concerns the skull and its elements only.

When the blood vessels around the skull begin to expand or contract then the surrounding muscles and nerve endings begin to react and pain occurs. With a migraine headache traditionally only one side of the head is affected but the pain is some of the most intense pain people experience. It is a pulsating pain that can go on for a very long time if not treated.

Two Different Kinds of Treatment

Migraines need to be diagnosed as soon as possible and for all we do not know about them your doctor still has the ability to diagnose and treat a migraine. One type of treatment deals with each individual occurrence and your doctor will usually prescribe pain killers and anti-inflammatory medications to help reduce the effects of an attack.

You need to take these medications right when you feel the effects of the migraine coming on and the medications work best if you give them 30 minutes to work while you are in a relaxed state. If it is at all possible to lie down while waiting for the medications to take effect then this can also help.

The other type of treatment is ongoing and preventive treatment. If your doctor has diagnosed you with recurring migraines then life can become difficult. Several times a month or, in some cases, several times a week you are crippled with horrible migraine pain. In order to help patients try to avoid the recurring migraine effects as much as possible doctors will prescribe a regular drug treatment that, while not guaranteeing complete relief, can help reduce the effects a great deal.

Is There Really A Migraine Cure? Possibly, Acupuncture Is Your Best Bet

Migraine headaches are very common types of vascular headaches and the condition is often characterized by extreme pain on either one side of the head, or on both sides along with upset stomach as well as, in some cases, disturbed vision. There are two types of migraine-caused headaches and these are classic as also common, and they differ from one another in how neurological symptoms appear, and before a classic migraine attack, there may be ten to thirty minutes of symptoms from the common type.

The Drug Industry’s False Claims

When it comes down to finding migraine cure, the drug industry is making all-out efforts to convince the general public that there are indeed migraine cures, though what actually occurs is that the medications can only mask the symptoms rather than cure the migraine. In fact, taking temporary relief measures for migraine cure are not the best course of action since such drugs are anything but a permanent solution. What’s more, when such drugs are taken over a prolonged period of time, they can lead to side-effects that can often turn very serious, and they do little besides providing temporary relief and are not in any way a migraine cure, since they do not attempt to find the basic cause of the pain.

The essential thing you need to realize is that when you suffer from migraine headaches, you must be aware that this is a signal from your body that something has gone horribly wrong in your body, and experiencing migraine headaches are not the problem; rather, they are symptoms of the problem. Thus, to find migraine cure, you need to find a means whereby you can fix your problem that is resulting in migraine headaches.

There no doubts those migraine headaches are affecting, it is believed, as many as fifteen percent of the population in the United Kingdom alone, and of these, there are supposedly as many as seventy-five percent women sufferers. One of the possible solutions with regard to migraine cure is trying out acupuncture that is a good alternative to taking drugs on which it is easy to become overly dependent and which also have side effects to contend with as well.

And, to get even more benefit from using acupuncture for migraine cure, you need to also make changes to your diet, and reducing your dependence on caffeine-oriented beverages and replacing that with more consumption of water will surely be a step in the right direction. The acupuncture session may last for an hour and it may require gentle massaging of your head and also having acupuncture needles placed strategically on your head. Soon, enough you should start seeing lesser numbers of migraine headaches, and eventually none at all, which only shows that acupuncture can indeed be a possible migraine cure.

Finding Cure For Migraine Headaches Making Progress

Possibly the worst pain a person has experienced could be considered the pain caused by a migraine headache. It is not only the pain from the headache that is debilitating as an acute sensitivity to light and sound can make the pain intolerable. The over 15 percent of women and about five percent of men suffering from migraine headaches, often simply want a dark, quiet place to stay until the headache goes away.

With this type of headache typical pain relievers have had to affect on reducing the pain and until recently, the supposition was that a person with a migraine would have basically have to suffer until it subsided. New research is showing promise of using triptan drugs for pain relief.

The exact cause of migraine headaches is unknown and there have too many theories to lend credence to any specific study. However, a reduction in serotonin has been noted in sufferers and several different triggers have been identified as causing these debilitating headaches. Triptans are being considered at the top of the list of drug that is showing progress in reducing the pain of a migraine. When it is combined with pain relievers, it has shown to drastically reduce the pain of this type of headache.

Diagnosing Causes Of Headaches

Before a person can begin medical treatment for migraine headaches, a doctor will usually attempt to determine if the pain is caused by some other ailment. Medical history may indicate that the headache is the primary cause of the pain, meaning the headache pain has not external causes. If migraine headache pain is found to be the result of another medical problem, treating the cause of the pain will be necessary.

There are several tests the doctor may conduct to determine the cause of the migraine headaches including a CT scan, computer imaging to view the brain in a cross-sectional image, MRI, magnetic resonance imaging to look for such things as a stroke, aneurysm and blood clots. In some cases a lumbar tap, to examine for illnesses such as meningitis. These tests can help determine if there are any underlying causes for the migraine pain.

Many times a migraine headache is preceded by what is termed an aura or a vision of lights in the eyes. Blind spots spreading through the field of vision or lines of line that make seeing difficult. The lights may also appear like sparkling lights that interfere with a person’s vision and can last for a few minutes to several hours before and immediately after a migraine headache begins.

What Causes An Ice Cream Headache?

So it is 90 degrees outside and you and your friends stop by the local ice cream place to get some ice cream to cool off. You are all downing your ice cream when suddenly one of your friends shouts out “brain freeze!” and stops eating to clutch his head and wince in pain. He may even writhe and shout a little because an ice cream headache can hurt for a little while.

So what causes an ice cream headache and why do we get an ice cream headache when we are eating something as wonderful as ice cream? Did you even notice that you can get an ice cream headache when you are eating or drinking anything that is cold and you are eating or drinking it too fast? There is a reason for that and it is a real honest medical reason. So allow me to ruin your ideas about an ice cream headache with the real truth behind what causes an ice cream headache.

You can get an ice cream headache from drinking a cold soda on a warm day, downing a ice cold bottle of water, or from anything cold that goes into your mouth and touches the roof of your mouth. In the roof of your mouth is a series of blood vessels that are interconnected to the blood vessels in your head. A headache is usually caused when the muscles around the skull unexplainably contract or when the blood vessels around the skull expand and contract more than they are supposed to.

You feel it behind your eyes usually because this is where the primary blood vessels are running that respond to this reaction. Also the muscles around your eye sockets become very sensitive when the muscles around your skull begin to contract. It is kind of like filling the front of your head with water and then pulling back on your hair so that your skin is real tight. You get the picture.

And Now The Truth

An ice cream headache happens because the cold ice cream, or whatever cold item you are having, is hitting the roof of your mouth at a frantic pace and the blood vessels located in the roof of your mouth are trying to compensate for the extreme cold by expanding to keep the brain warm.

This shoots all the way up the front of your skull and can sit right in behind your eyes causing the classic ice cream headache. The cure? Stop eating so much ice cream so fast and just let your system naturally right itself. Don’t try and warm your system back up by introducing something warm because that could aggravate the problem. You got yourself into this mess now you have to ride it out. Don’t worry it doesn’t take long.

If you do feel an ice cream headache coming do not take that as an invitation to a contest. Stop eating or drinking whatever you are eating or drinking immediately. The reaction of the blood vessels could cause one to burst and then your trip to the ice cream store would end real quick. If you stop eating and give your system time to adjust itself you should be able to pick up your spoon again in no time and try eating at a human pace this time!

Figuring Out a Hulcenating Migraine?

A hulcenating migraine is what happens when you try and say that you want information about a hallucinating migraine but you wind up spelling it hulcenating migraine instead!

If we are to assume that the effects of the hulcenating migraine are the same as the actual hallucinating migraine; then these effects can be varied and do depend on each patient’s personal experience. The incorrectly spelled hulcenating migraine is a condition, not unlike the hallucinating migraine, that causes the mind to play tricks on the patient and see things, and experience things, which may not be real.

Hulcenating migraines can be crippling and need to be attended to as soon as possible. Hulcenating migraine headaches are not common and usually anything that has the ability to cause hallucinating migraine needs to be treated immediately by your doctor.

If you have recurring hallucinating migraines then this may be the signs of something much more serious and you need to get treatment right away. Brain trauma, or a potentially damaging condition to the brain, can be the results of hallucinating migraines but also the results of a much more serious condition such as brain tumors and other brain ailments. The longer you let these conditions go untreated the more dangerous they become.

Very, Very Rare

Migraine headaches, if they are diagnosed properly, are not conditions of the brain. The brain does not feel pain and the brain does not react to pain in a way that would induce a migraine headache. If you are having what is being called hallucinating migraines then there is a chance that there maybe a chemical imbalance in your brain that needs immediate attention.

Through research, medical scientists have been able to theorize that migraine headaches can be the result of an imbalance in the blood stream and that causes the blood vessels around your skull to react and cause pain. But if you are having hallucinations due to headaches then this may not be the work of a migraine but rather some other very serious condition.

There is not a lot of information available about the possibility of getting a hallucinating migraine mostly because research on the migraine headache is ongoing and also we really know very little of how outside stimulus really affects the brain itself. But if you are having migraines so bad that you may be seeing, hearing, or sensing things that are not there then you need to get treatment immediately. It is a very rare condition that medical science knows very little about and it needs to be studied at length before we can really get a handle on it.

Hemiplegic Migraine Causes Temporary Paralysis Of One Part Of The Body

Of the many different types of migraine, one is called hemiplegic migraine and it refers to what is known as hemiplegia in which you will suffer from temporary paralysis of any single body part, and most often, the symptoms of such a condition begin about ten minutes or an hour before the actual headache begins.

Rare Kind Of Migraine

Hemiplegic migraine is actually a vary rare kind of migraine and it is also supposed to be a very serious kind of migraine, and after multiple attacks, the results could make the patient become extremely weak and thus he or she must be closely observed. Among the symptoms of hemiplegic migraine, you can include the tiniest of head injuries, paralysis that affects any single part of the body in which there are sensations of needles and pins as too numbness. In addition, the headaches may disappear once the person becomes paralyzed, and there is also weakness on one part of the body including the leg, arms and even face. Finally, there is another symptom of hemiplegic migraine and that is that it causes you to experience difficulty while speaking.

To understand what hemiplegic migraine is, you need to know at the very outset what the episodic attacks of migraine means, and also that there are two types of hemiplegic migraine which are FHM or familial, and SHM or sporadic. Though SHM and FHM are different, and because there are certain symptoms of hemiplegic migraine that may in general are present in both these types, it is however, more usual for each type of hemiplegic migraine to have their own distinct symptoms and even these will vary amongst different individuals.

Once you have classified the types of hemiplegic migraine, you will next need to learn how best to treat these conditions and you should have two main aims in this respect which are to first treat the paralysis, and secondly to identify which medications to take, which must also be endorsed by your physician so that no complications arise. And, in this regard, there are medications such as ergotamines as well as triptans that are not meant to be taken for treating hemiplegic migraine.

There no doubts that to treat migraines is a very challenging task though by using abortive as well as preventive treatment you can bring the situation under control. Also, if you are a patient of hemiplegic migraine, you will need to continuously do some studies on the symptoms, the disease itself and also the different treatment options. Also, treatment is normally very gradual and requires to carefully review and to also have the complete records of the family history as well.

Different Headache Types

Headaches are like anything else in the medical world in that they come in a bunch of varieties. It is extremely important to understand the different headache types so that you understand how each headache types is treated and what symptoms there are to look for. As with any headache types if you get the occasional headache then there are many ways to combat them but if you find yourself with chronic headaches then you need to get to your doctor right away. A headache may seem like a minor, or major, inconvenience but a headache could also be the doorway to a larger set of problems. So if you experience chronic headache symptoms see your doctor immediately. In the meantime here are the basic headache types for your information.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are the most common headache type and they affect millions of people each and everyday. Tension headaches are usually the result of stress or other forms of outside stimulus that cause stiffness in the neck muscles and the muscles surrounding the skull. A tension headache is a constant pain that usually encircles your skull and can feel like a belt wrapped around your head with someone pulling on it. What a tension headache is the contracting of the skull muscles causing a partial loss of blood flow to the brain. The muscles react with pain and the brain reacts with slowed response and difficulty concentrating.

To relieve a tension headache just remove the source of the tension. Put on some soft music in a quiet out of the way room and relax. Take a warm bath or get a massage. Using drugs to relieve a tension headache should be your last resort.

Migraines

Of all of the headache types out there migraines seem to be the most well known. Everyone knows what a migraine headache is even though few people actually suffer from them on a regular basis. As a joke many people will say that the stress of the day is giving them a migraine. Not much is known about what causes a migraine but what is known is that a migraine does not need stress to be triggered. The prevailing theory is that migraines are caused by an imbalance in the blood system that causes blood vessels around the skull to expand and contract. This causes the pain of a migraine..

A migraine is one of those headache types that should be treated by a doctor and not with over the counter medication.

Cluster Headache

Also known as the suicide headache because this headache is the most painful of them all. It has been referred to in medical journals as the most intense pain a human being could ever suffer. A cluster headache cannot be stopped by over the counter medication and if you get a doctor that knows what they are doing then they will treat the cluster headache like an emergency. The pain is so bad that once a cluster headache hits the patient can do nothing else but try and deal with the pain.

As of now there are some medications used to relieve cluster headaches but research is still being done.

Some Good Headache Remedies

My mom was never a health care professional but you know how moms can develop medical knowledge over time that no doctor can seem to get a handle on. My mom once told me that the best headache remedies are the ones that eliminate the source of the headache - the next day my dad was packing and leaving the house.

But those sorts of headache remedies don’t always work for every occasion and the most effective headache remedies are the ones that seem so simple that they cannot possible work - but yet they do. If you get headaches and you need quick headache remedies then trying anything once will not kill you, it may even help you. So lend an ear to some really basic, yet strangely effective, headache remedies.

First and Foremost

If you experience frequent headaches, whether they are severe or not, get to your doctor immediately. If you are experiencing two or more headaches a week then that could be the sign of bigger problems so do not engage in any traditional headache remedies and get to your doctor right away. Many people ignore headaches as just a simple inconvenience but recurring headaches could be the sign of something more serious like the potential for brain tumors so do not let a persistent headache become a larger problem; get to your doctor immediately.

Also if you have migraine headaches regularly, these are very painful recurring headaches, then too get to your doctor immediately for prescribed treatment. These headache remedies are not going to help migraines. These headache remedies are more for tension headaches and stress headaches.

Shhh!

One of the reasons we get headaches is an overload of external stimulus otherwise known as too much stuff going on around us. Tension headaches can come about from too much stress in our lives causing our muscles to tense up. Stress headaches can come from constantly worrying about things or staring at something for too long like a computer screen.

For this, one of the things you can do is get to a quiet room and just relax. Close out the world, maybe put a warm moist towel over your eyes, and just close the door. Of course if you are going to do this and then reintroduce yourself back into the stressful situation then expect more headaches. But now you know one way of getting rid of them.

Stop the Sugar

Sugar rushes are real and headaches from too much sugar are real as well. It may seem like the simplest thing in the world but if you have gotten into the routine of eating a lot of sugar during the day then that may be your source of headaches. Cut back on your sugar intake and see if that helps.
