How to Get Quick Headache Relief

The first thing anyone wants when they get a headache is immediate and effective headache relief. Headache relief can come in many different forms and attempts to combat the things that caused the headache and remove them from the picture. The idea of headache relief is very much dependent upon what kind of headache we are talking about and to what degree the headache is affecting you.

Remember that getting headache relief for minor symptoms that do not recur is something that can be offered from an article such as this. If, however, you have chronically recurring symptoms intense or not then you may need more than simple headache relief. If you get recurring headaches or headache symptoms see your doctor immediately.

Migraines

Headache relief for migraines can be a complicated and difficult thing to prescribe and it is absolutely something that should be done by your doctor. This is why having recurring headache symptoms requires a visit to your doctor. On your own you cannot diagnose a migraine headache and you can also not effectively offer yourself headache relief for a migraine. A misdiagnosed migraine can cause a lot of problems and could also be a sign of potentially bigger problems. But a correctly diagnosed migraine headache can be treated with medication from your doctor.

Your doctor may prescribe you medication that you are to only take when you feel a migraine coming on. You will get this kind of treatment if you do not display chronic recurring migraine headaches. If your migraines are chronic and recurring then your doctor may put you on a preventative plan designed to help reduce the effects of a recurring migraine.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are headaches caused by a stiffening of the muscles in your neck and head or from fatigue caused by constantly staring at something like a computer screen or a book. Tension headaches will feel like a circular clamp around your head and that is because the muscles around your skull are contracting and partially cutting off the blood flow to your brain.

The best way to beat a tension headache is to relax and take a load off for a while. Continued exposure to the stressful situation will cause the headache to increase in intensity and remain longer. Taking medication is probably the last thing you want to do for a tension headache; just remove the tension and you should be fine.

Headache May Be Sign Of Serious Problem

There are many causes of a headache and each person may be affected by different triggers in different ways. The degree of pain and how long it lasts will also vary from person to person, but one of the important things to remember is that a headache can be a symptom to other, possibly serious health problems. There are some medical procedures as well as some medications that are known for causing pain, and the associated headache can be understood when they occur.

Medically speaking, a headache is pain located in the head above the ears and eyes, however it can also extend down into the neck and upper back. The two classifications of headache are considered to be primary, in which the pain originates in the brain and secondary, for which the pain in the head is the result of another medical problem such as a sinus infection. There are some patients that experience pain when atmospheric pressure changes abruptly and mistake this pain as being caused by sinus problems.

In most patients, pain of a headache can be alleviated with over the counter painkillers but for those suffering secondary pain, the underlying cause will have to the eliminated before the pain diminishes.

Medications Can Cause Pain In The Head

There are medications used to dilate arteries, nitrates for example that are used for chest pain in heart patients. The sudden opening of the arteries can cause a severe headache, but patients understand this is a normal reaction to using the medication. Those who undergo a lumbar tap to test spinal fluid may also suffer severe pain if they do not remain in a reclining position for at least one hour following the test. When the spinal fluid is drawn out a small bubble of air remains in the spine. If a person sits up to quickly, the air rises to the top of the spine and feels as though it explodes into a headache.

Probably the most common cause of a headache is tension, which affects nearly everyone at one time or another. Usually accompanied by self-induced stress over a situation than manifests itself by pain the upper back and crawling into the back of the head. A tension headache will usually affect both sides of the brain, but is rarely debilitating and most can work through this type by using over the counter pain medication. The frequency in which a person suffers from a headache can indicated the need for testing to determine the cause of the recurrence and how it should be treated.

Different Types Of Headaches Are Experienced By Many

There are many different types of headaches, and some of these different types of headaches can be most debilitating if not treated properly. Some people get a headache when their teenager decides to get a new wardrobe while other people get a headache from the stress of their jobs. Different types of headaches need different kinds of treatment. The teenager with a new wardrobe may be untreatable, but most of the other different types of headaches can be treated appropriately. Some headaches last a short period of time while other headaches can be a constant nagging pain.

Migraine headaches are experienced by many people from the time they are teenagers, and these are not a result of any wardrobes. These are usually caused by the chemicals that are released in the head when nerves are squeezed by arteries. These headaches can last for several days, and the people affected by migraines are often useless while the headache persists. These headaches can be treated with ice placed appropriately and with relaxation exercises in some cases. Other cases need to be treated with medications. These headaches can affect a person so the only thing that they can do is sleep until they go away. Fortunately for those who suffer from migraines, there are new medications that have made a significant difference in the treatment of these headaches.

Different Types Of Headaches Should Be Diagnosed If Persistent

Different types of headaches require different types of care. Most people get a headache from time to time that can be treated with over the counter medications. Other headaches go away naturally after a good sleep or some relaxation. There are different types of headaches that could be an indication of a serious condition so people with persistent or severe headaches should consult their physician. Some headaches are caused by problems with the sinuses, and these can be triggered by exposure to different elements. A sinus headache can usually be treated with decongestants for speedy relief.

Cluster headaches are often very painful and often worse than all the different types of headaches. These headaches can last from thirty minutes to several hours. Some people can experience several cluster headaches in one day. These headaches are usually extremely painful and restricting to those who suffer. It is often hard to sit still or sleep with a cluster headache. There are several medications that can bring relief from a cluster headache, but each patient should consult with their doctor when treating a cluster headache. Some of these medications will prevent the onset of a cluster headache while other medications will provide relief after the headache appears.

Constant Headaches Are Painful And Distracting

Constant headaches are painful, but these headaches can also be very disruptive. People with constant headaches find it hard to concentrate on their duties or take care of their responsibilities. A constant headache can make it difficult to care properly for other members of the family. A painful headache can also make a person very irritable, and those around may not understand the cause. People who suffer from constant headaches often spend a great deal of time and energy trying to find out the cause of their problem. Once people do find a cause for their constant headaches they must find a way to relieve the pain.

People with constant headaches often spend a good deal of their time trying to find relief. There are many tests that can be used to determine the cause of constant headaches. Each person who suffers from headaches should work with their physician to find the source of the headaches and the proper medication to relieve the pain. Relief from the problem often takes time, but the solution to the problem often seems a miracle. Sometimes it is wise to keep a journal that describes the pain through the course of a day. This might help the physician decide if the headaches are caused from the stress of daily responsibilities.

Constant Headaches Respond To Different Treatment

Those people who suffer from constant headaches because of the stress from responsibilities might have to adjust their lifestyle to relieve the pain. There are also some treatments that might help. Acupuncture has been successful in helping some people with constant headaches. Sleep can also help relieve the pain from headaches. There are some relaxation techniques that might relieve the pain of headaches. Meditation and yoga have been used by some for relaxation and relief from headaches. Some people can find relief from headaches with painkillers from the local pharmacy or grocery store.

Although relief might be found with relaxation or simple medications, constant headaches could be the sign of a serious condition. A doctor should search for the source of the problem. The headaches could be the sign of a tumor or arthritis. The treatment for these two conditions is very different so it is most important to try to determine the exact cause. Other conditions that cause headaches include insomnia and fibromyalgia. Some conditions that cause headaches are more difficult to diagnose, but each person should continue to search for the cause of their problem.

The Horrible World of the Cluster Headache

There are headaches and then there is the cluster headache. A cluster headache is a very rare and painful type of headache that can occur in a group. They are usually brought on by atmospheric changes or some other external stimulus.

The cluster headache has been known to be so severe that it has actually drive people to suicide which has earned the cluster headache the awful nickname of the suicide headache. No matter how you slice it, the cluster headache is one of the worst kind of headaches you can get and, just like any other headache, very little is known about what causes a such a headache and what may be the most effective treatment for people suffering from a cluster headache.

A cluster headache comes on suddenly and can be categorized by a sharp pain in the eye area or the temple. Some people compare the pain like that of a nail being driven through the eye or scalding hot water being poured directly into the eye socket. The pain can last anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours.

In extreme cases it can last for days which when you consider that many reputable medical journals have called the pain the most significant pain known to man, explains why it has earned the reputation of being called the suicide headache. It is reported that a cluster headache makes a migraine look like a holiday at Disneyworld if that gives you any idea of the kind of pain we are talking about.

Just Not a Good Thing

Anyone suffering from a cluster headache is immediately incapacitated and unable to do anything other than cope with the pain. Muscle tightness, sweating in the face area, and nausea are reported during an episode with one of these headaches and they can also take on the cyclical characteristics of regular and recurring condition.

People with these types of headaches are known to experience them at the same time of day for many days in a row and for almost the same amount of time during each episode. These cluster headaches are known to be so severe that they can wake a person from a sound sleep which has earned them the reputation of potentially becoming a very painful internal alarm clock for the sufferer.

Doctors that are familiar with the cluster headache are more apt to be able to diagnose and treat this rare condition but other doctors have been known to mistakenly diagnose it as a migraine and wind up trying to treat it incorrectly. Over the counter pain medications have no effect on these severe headaches and only certain types of strong steroid like medications have any effect on relieving the pain. Many people that attempt to seek medical treatment for this condition are misdiagnosed and drug addicts seeking a fix as that is the fit that these severe headaches can throw you into. They are serious headaches and if you experience a sharp recurring pain to the eye see your doctor immediately.

What To Do About A Chronic Headache

Sometimes you get a headache and eventually it goes away. If it is a tension headache caused by stress then it will usually subside if you take a break and just relax for a while. Even people that suffer from migraine headaches can be diagnosed as having infrequent occurrences that do not require any more than some pain killers and maybe anti-inflammatory drugs to treat.

But every once in a while you get a patient with a chronic headache that just does not seem to want to go away and those are the patients that you need to really keep an eye on. A chronic headache can potentially be the sign of other things going on that could be as dangerous as a brain tumor. A chronic headache can not only affect your life but it can also affect the lives of those around you as you become more and more difficult to deal with the more often you get these chronic headaches.

It is unusual for tension headaches to develop into chronic headache because tension headaches are usually tied directly to the stress in your life and any other outside stimulus that you may be experiencing. It could also be that you are taking in too much sugar and this is what is causing what seems to be chronic headaches but in reality is just your body reacting to something going on.

The best way to find out why you keep getting chronic headaches that seem to feel like tension headaches is to talk with your doctor. It could be that you have too much stress in your life and chronic headaches can lead to other physical ailments. There could also be other physical problems going so talk with your doctor.

Then There Is The Ones You Expect To Be Chronic

Medical science is not sure what actually causes headaches but there is enough data to be able to tell between a migraine headache and any other type of headache. Migraines can come in two types. There are the migraines that get treated on a per occurrence basis and are not recurring or there is the migraine headaches that could be classified as chronic headaches and are under a doctor’s care.

For many sufferers of chronic migraines the answer is treatment through medication from your doctor. Different patients react differently to different medications so for more severe migraine cases doctors will usually mix medications to reduce side effects.

Headaches are things that doctors still do not completely understand. Tension headaches are the easiest to understand, and the easiest to treat, because it is pretty clear what brought them on. But for certain types of migraine headaches, and stronger types of headaches, there is still much research to be done on what causes them and how to treat them.

Getting To Know The Many Different Causes Of Headaches

Knowing the causes of headaches can help the medical community treat the condition a lot better than taking shots in the dark, and according to the latest studies on headaches, headaches are generally chemical in their nature as well as emotional and even problems related to structure.

Dental Problems

Perhaps the most common of all causes of headaches is dental problems and it has been found that when teeth in a patient’s lower jaw cannot meet properly with teeth in his or her upper jaw, the result is an onset of headache which in turn is triggered by muscle tension. In a similar vein, when a person grinds or clenches his or her teeth at night in what is also known as ‘bruxism’, there is a greater likelihood of headaches occurring which is brought on because of a lot of chewing and even grinding which can cause some of the bones as well as muscles in the person’s jaws to become so stimulated as to cause an onset of a headache.

Another possible cause of headaches is chemical sensitivity, and persons will find that some chemicals that are found in different types of gadgets including computers are known to trigger headaches and even migraine attacks.

Also, caffeine that you may consume from drinks such as sodas, tea, coffee as well as in eatables such as chocolates and also a number of painkillers that you may have purchased over the counter can be thought of as being causes of headaches, and so, if you are suffering from headaches, it would be a good idea to eliminate caffeine from your diet altogether.

Another possible cause of headaches is magnesium deficiency which will more than likely cause headaches as compared to people that do not have and deficiency in magnesium. Thus, to ensure that you have enough magnesium in your body, you must makes sure not to get mentally stressed more than is good for you, drink plenty of coffee and eat foods with plenty of sugar and also have a great amount of sodium in your body.

There are still other causes of headaches and these include infections as well as bacterial diseases, and it is known that when your nose and throat or even the ear is infected, you would be more prone to having headaches. Even muscle tension that is brought on due to stress as well as anxiety can be considered other causes of headaches as too problems with the musculoskeletal system.

Several Conditions Are The Cause Of Headaches

Many people suffer from headaches which differ in severity. A brief headache might be the result of a sleepless night and the cause of a headache could be a serious brain condition. The causes of headaches result is various symptoms. Some headaches are very painful while others cause only a dull pain. The causes of headaches that can be easily identified should not be a worry. If a headache appears at the end of a particularly grueling day, the pain might subside after a good rest. The cause of a headache that does not disappear after some relaxation, simple medication or a good sleep should be determined by a physician.

Many people have migraine headaches and experts have determined the cause of these headaches after extensive research. The evidence from the research points to problems with the vascular system in the brain. The chemicals that are released in the brain because of the vascular problems cause the pain and discomfort of a migraine headache. The cause of these headaches is the temporal artery which is outside of the skull in the area of the temple. Many people who suffer from migraines are related to others who suffer from the same problem.

Causes Of Headaches Lead To The Cure

There are many different causes of headaches, and the source of the problem should lead to the proper treatment. Some people suffer from headaches caused by arthritis or fibromyalgia. Other people suffer from headaches caused by a lack of sleep. The cause of the headache must lead to the cure. The treatment for one type of headache may not be appropriate for other headaches. Each person who suffers from severe or constant headaches should consult with their doctor to determine the cause.

A physician will be able to recommend and arrange for a series of tests to determine the cause of headaches. The necessary tests may take some time and patience, but people should not get discouraged until all of the results are in to the physician. When the information is collected, the physician might recommend changes in lifestyle, surgery or medications. The recommendations of a conscientious physician will be made based on all of the information available. Some headaches might be the result of a very serious condition such as a brain tumor, but most headaches will be more easily treated. Years of expert research has provided some great medications and treatments for those with headaches.

What Is the Cause for Migraine Headaches?

If you get migraine headaches, or know someone that gets them, then you know the extreme pain involved. Sometimes it helps to know what may be the cause for migraine headaches in order to help prevent or treat them. The cause for migraine headaches is not an easy thing to pin down but scientists think they may be on the trail to finding the exact cause for migraine headaches and potentially developing a more clinical and exact way of treating them.

Not a lot is known about the cause for migraine headaches but the prevailing theory is that two chemicals found naturally in the blood, dopamine and serotonin, are the cause for migraine headaches. Dopamine and serotonin are not only associated with causing pain but they also can cause the blood vessels in the brain to act abnormally releasing too much blood or not enough blood to the brain depending on the reaction.

While the exact cause for migraine headaches is not really known right now scientists point to this imbalance in the amount of dopamine and serotonin and the effect these chemicals have on blood flow to the brain as the primary cause for migraine headaches.

What Triggers Migraines?

Many people claim that their migraine headaches come on suddenly and without warning but this is not entirely true. If you keep a close watch on any patterns that start to develop when a migraine headache comes on you can usually identify at least some of the triggers that can be a cause for migraine headaches.

One of the biggest triggers is stress. Stress causes chemical reactions in the body that get compounded by any imbalance in dopamine or serotonin and cause migraines. Another key trigger to migraines is smoking. Not only does smoking trigger migraines but smoking can also reduce the effectiveness of migraine treatments so if you smoke and get migraines you may want to quit smoking.

Some other triggers to migraines include a lot of food related items. If you miss a meal it can cause a migraine and this particular pattern is very easy to track and nail down. Sometimes certain foods like chocolate or cheese can trigger a migraine. If the theory that migraine headaches are caused by an imbalance in brain chemicals then foods as a trigger makes sense because all foods cause chemical reactions in the human body.
